Jumhuri Mudara: the US special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction (SIGAR) has announced that ISIS remains a serious threat to Afghanistan and the region.
This organization stated today (Saturday, February 1st) that ISIS-Khorasan has claimed responsibility for 60 attacks in Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, Pakistan, and turkey in 2024.
According to SIGAR, ISIS attacks have increased by more the 40% compared to 2023, raising concerns that Afghanistan could once again become a haven for terrorists.
SIGAR specially mentioned an ISIS attack in Kabul in which Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, the former Taliban minister of refugees and repatriation, was killed.
The report states, that since august 15, 2021, ISIS Khorasan’s attacks have resulted in the deaths of eight Taliban officials, including Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, who was considered as a” high-value target”.
SIGAR emphasized that the Taliban still maintain ties with Al-Qaeda and have provided safe havens for the network.
The organization stated that Al-Qaeda will continue its cooperation with other terrorist groups in Afghanistan and its ongoing relationship with the Taliban.
The report, citing the UN sanctions monitoring team, states that 12 senior leaders of Al-Qaeda network are currently present in Afghanistan.
SIGAR also added that the Taliban in Afghanistan supports Tahrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
According to the U.S. Special inspector, Tahrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has between 6,000 and 6,500 fighters in Afghanistan.
