US aid to Afghanistan has been halted due to concerns about the Taliban's access to this aid

Jumhuri Mudara: The US State Department spokesperson  has said that the US has stopped funding the World Food Program in Afghanistan and Yemen due to concerns about the Taliban's and Houthis' access to this aid.

Reuters news agency previously  reported that US President Donald Trump wants to stop the remaining US aid to Afghanistan.

US State Department Spokesperson Tommy Bruce said at a press conference  on Tuesday (April 8)  that a limited number of global food programs have been suspended based on specific priorities in some countries.

"What we have here  is that the largest World Food Program  assistance group in Yemen and Afghanistan  has been terminated by an executive order," he said  . "Based on the concern that this funding has benefited terrorist groups, including the Houthis and the Taliban."

According to the  US State Department spokesperson, all food aid in northern Yemen through the World Food Program has been suspended to reduce any interference by the Houthis.

He  also stressed that food aid has been intermittently suspended across Afghanistan to reduce the Taliban's intervention.

This  comes as the Reuters news agency, citing several sources familiar with the matter, reported that the US government has reactivated at least six foreign aid programs that were recently canceled.

In response to the suspension of U.S. aid, the World Food Program said it could be a death sentence for millions of people facing extreme hunger.
